Syracuse has headed north of the border for recruits a few times since Dino Babers arrived on the hill, and on Monday the Orange plucked one more prospect in the form of Matthew Bergeron.
The 6-foot-6 Bergeron hails from committed to the Orange after having camped at SU in June, where he reportedly drew the attention of Babers and his coaching staff after a dominant day. Bergeron told Syracuse.com that he weighs 300 pounds right now, meaning he’s already got tremendous size for an offensive tackle prospect.
Bergeron joins Geoff Cantin, a 6-foot-4 linebacker, as this year’s commitments out of Canada (Quebec, to be exact). In recent years, the Orange have also plucked Tyrell Richards and Pat Davis from north of the border.
Going by Bergeron’s tape, while it’s hard to tell what the level of competition is, it’s easy to see that he’s a big, powerful young man with better-than-average agility for his size. He’s very well put-together, and clearly already very strong. With a couple years in Syracuse’s strength program, it’s easy to see him becoming a weight room wonder. Now, will that translate to on the field success? Time will tell. For now, check out his highlights from last season…
