Last spring, Syracuse University seemed almost destined to land high level wide receiver Donald Stewart, a 6-foot-4 pass catcher out of Paramus Catholic. It’s been no secret for anyone who knows me that Stewart is one of my favorite prospects in the class of 2016 when it comes to receivers, so imagine my disappointment (at the time) when the Orange seemed to be moving on from Stewart. However, things may have changed.

With Dino Babers and his staff looking to add numerous wide receivers, Stewart could very well get back onto the radar for Syracuse after it seemed like the ship had sailed. Stewart seemed to be almost certainly headed to either Stanford or Michigan, and while both of those schools are possibilities, they’re also filling up fast and the fact that Stewart remains uncommitted can only work in Syracuse’s favor.

Now, why would I be mentioning Stewart as a possibility? Well, among a few other wide receiver prospects members of the new staff have been reaching out to and following on Twitter, Kim McCloud has added Stewart to that list. Babers had already been following Stewart from his time at Bowling Green, so the staff is clearly familiar with the talented athlete, who caught 34 passes for 632 yards and 11 touchdowns, according to, in 2015.

Stewart also had what deemed the “play of the year” in high school football for the state of New Jersey when he hauled in a Hail Mary touchdown reception as time expired to help Paramus stun national power Don Bosco. The big-time receiver prospect has excellent hands and body control, and even though he doesn’t have elite top-end speed, he’s able to use his body and athleticism to get open and make big plays. He’s a legitimate high-end Power 5 prospect at the receiver position, and could make an immediate, and big impact in the Babers offense.

Syracuse is clearly going hard after receivers as they close out the 2016 recruiting cycle, with Dez Fitzpatrick, DeVaughn Cooper, Sean Riley, Jerron Rollins, and Malik Harrison among the players to have recently gotten offers. Stewart could very well be joining that mix in the very near future. For my own sanity as one of the biggest fans of Stewart there is, I hope an offer from the new staff does indeed come to fruition.
