It’s kind of amazing how ripple effects can be felt in the far reaches, isn’t it? Here we are, early in Syracuse University’s 2016 football recruiting cycle, and we’re still looking ahead to the class of 2017 and, in particular, big-time linebacker prospect Loren Mondy. The 4-star Texas native is currently committed to Arizona State, but there have been some hints that he might be willing to seriously investigate the Orange.

And as with most of the latest recruits to suddenly start giving Syracuse a serious look, it all comes back to the commitment of Robert Washington and Team USA football. Mondy was a teammate of Aapri Washington on Team USA, and is also very friendly with Robert Washington and Moe Neal. And if we want to dream big for the class of 2017, he’s also close with his fellow Dallas area standout linebacker, Anthony Hines.

At 6-foot-1 and about 235 pounds, Mondy is already a physically imposing middle linebacker who could even bulk up to play defensive end at the next level. The Mansfield Lake Ridge backer, in addition to having verbaled to Arizona State, also sports offers from Cal and Kansas, and with his size and talent will no doubt garner a lot more national attention from the power five conferences should he in fact choose to open up his recruitment.

Syracuse hasn’t recruited Texas much over the last few years, with the last Texan on the Orange roster being Drew Allen in 2013. Before that, the last Texas native was tight end Charlie Copa, who transferred to Tulsa after a single season in Central New York in 2010. In fact, the most high profile Texas football product on the Syracuse campus is playing a different sport: current lacrosse star Brandon Mullins is a former Texas 5A Defensive Player of the Year at linebacker, coming from the Dallas area himself.

Of course the lack of Texas talent could change in a hurry, with the Orange showing serious interest in players like Jared Mayden, an elite class of 2016 cornerback, and Jalen Mayden, Jared’s younger brother and a promising quarterback prospect in 2018. Both players have offers from the Orange. And of course, there’s Mondy, and possibly Hines, if the Orange are able to get their foot in the door for the two big time linebackers.

Time will tell.
