A new name to keep an eye on as we close out the 2016 recruiting cycle has emerged, and could become a focal point for the Syracuse University coaching staff as we head toward National Signing Day. Kenny Turnier, a defensive end prospect from Miami, appears to be on Syracuse’s radar as the staff continues trying to shore up the defensive line.

Turnier is a 6-foot-4, 230 pound prospect from Miami Central, and right now has offers from Central Florida, Florida International, Idaho, and South Dakota. However, he appears to be on the verge of getting a lot more attention, and it was reported this morning that Oregon State coaches are in Miami to visit him today. He was just recently followed on Twitter by Nick Monroe, who recruits Florida for Syracuse, suggesting the Orange are intrigued by the athletic lineman.

And Turnier is certainly a strong athlete, as well. He also plays power forward for Miami Central, and you can see his quickness translate from the basketball court to the gridiron in his film. He’s a long, strong athlete, with a good frame to add weight and become a nice looking pass rusher at the next level. If you watch his highlights, you can see him start off the clip by simply bull rushing an overwhelmed blocker to get into the backfield, followed by a series of plays where he makes smart, anticipatory reads to get to the ball and both disrupt the quarterback and bring down running backs behind the line of scrimmage.

As I mentioned, defensive end is a priority for Syracuse. Right now, the Orange have Jamal Holloway and Kendall Coleman committed, and have a few other visits set up with potential defensive end prospects, such as Drew Beesley, Collin Miller, Joshua Black, and Jaquwan Nelson.

With the returning depth so thin, Syracuse will probably be looking to take two more defensive ends in this cycle, and Turnier looks like a young player with terrific potential to become a very good player at the college level. It will be interesting to see if the staff goes all in on pursuing the Miami lineman.

UPDATE: Turnier committed to Oregon State early this afternoon.
