It’s not really a surprise – like, at all – but 4-star quarterback Kasim Hill picked Maryland over Syracuse and others on Saturday afternoon. The signs have been pointing toward the Terps for quite awhile at this point, so when Hill revealed his choice on Periscope today the only surprise would have been if he’d gone with any other program.
With Hill off the board, Syracuse now moves its full attention to Don Bosco signal caller Tommy DeVito. DeVito has long been one of the top three QBs on the Orange recruiting board, along with Hill and Jack Coan. Coan, you may recall, recently picked Wisconsin. DeVito is expected to make a decision soon, and right now, Syracuse fans should feel pretty damn good about where the Orange stand.
Obviously, you can’t feel fully confident until DeVito’s choice is actually made, but right now if I had to make a prediction I’d guess that he commits to Syracuse within the next week or two. He’s got several other high major offers, including Wake Forest, Boston College, Rutgers, and yes, Maryland. Maryland would seem to be off the board, and while anything can happen, it really feels like he’s Syracuse’s to lose right now.
DeVito recently told NJ.com that he’d be talking things over with his parents this weekend, and that he was done taking visits. He’s been to Syracuse twice this spring, which certainly doesn’t hurt the chances for Dino Babers and the Orange.
I’ve long been a fan of Kasim Hill’s, but while he certainly had interest in Syracuse and vice versa, it’s felt for awhile like he wanted to stay close to home and build up the UMD program with other DMV area players (Ayinde Eley, a big-time linebacker from Maryland, committed to the Terps at the same time – and on the same Periscope stream – as Hill today, and they also just added 4-star lineman Cam Spence, a Baltimore native, yesterday). If Syracuse does indeed land DeVito, that’ll still be one heck of a win on the recruiting trail for Babers and his staff.
