The Syracuse football staff has already secured 17 commitments for the 2017 recruiting cycle. Offensive lineman Patrick Davis is the latest, though more could be coming at any point moving forward. The Orange are hoping to reel in one of the biggest fish on the board soon, with 4-star tight end Charles Reeves visiting next weekend.
But outside of Reeves, and also Jordan Wright, there are definitely some other names to monitor as we move toward the start of the season and time keeps ticking down to signing day.
TE Ravian Pierce
This 6-foot-4, 225 pound tight end signed with Mississippi State out of high school. However, he wound up at Southwest Mississippi Community College, where he’s considered one of the top tight end prospects in junior college across the nation. Syracuse obviously wants to bring in another tight end, and while Mississippi State still likely leads for Pierce, he’s definitely on the Orange’s radar.
RB Jordan Nettles
Running back is still a priority position for Syracuse, as the Orange want to add another RB in this year’s class. Isaiah Miller and Jalen Holston are both high on the board for the Orange, but one more name to keep an eye on is Jordan Nettles. The 5-foot-9 tailback from Romeoville, Illinois has been committed to Northern Illinois since June but the Syracuse coaches will certainly be keeping tabs on the highly intriguing prospect, who claims a time of 4.4 in the 40 on his HUDL page.
LB Louis Acceus
Syracuse just lost one of its linebacker commits when Keirston Johnson decided to open his recruitment back up, and one player who could soon become a priority target to take his place in the class is Louis Acceus. The New Jersey native is a 6-foot-1, 205 pound outside linebacker and is rated as a 3-star prospect pretty much across the board. Scout rates him as the third best LB prospect in Jersey. He’s got some impressive offers, including Michigan State, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and North Carolina.
LB Trajan McQueen
This 6-foot-1, 215 pound inside linebacker from North Carolina is another option to replace Johnson in this year’s class. Syracuse has started paying much closer attention to McQueen, who has programs like Missouri and Louisville at the top of his leaderboard at this point. If Virginia Tech offers, they could become the favorite, but Syracuse is still a program to watch in his recruitment moving forward.
DT John Mitchell
Syracuse just took a commitment from one defensive tackle, Curtis Harper, but the Orange may not be done at the position just yet. Keep an eye on John Mitchell, a 6-foot-3, 270 pounder from Illinois. He already holds an offer from the Orange, in addition to Illinois and programs like Western Michigan, Central Michigan, Miami (Ohio), and Buffalo. He’s a 3-star prospect, rated by Scout as the second best DT recruit in Illinois this year.
Keep in mind, this is obviously far from a complete list. But if you’re looking for a few names you maybe weren’t familiar with before, these are five that are certainly worth keeping in mind. Obviously, Syracuse will continue to pursue players like Reeves, Wright, Esezi Otomewo, Marcus Bowman, and Marquise Blair among others. Davion Johnson, DeCavilon Reese, and Devin Darrington are three more running backs to watch, as well.
