It’s always good to start the morning off with some Florida orange juice, and this morning the Syracuse football program kicked the day off right with a commitment from Sunshine State linebacker Jack Smith. Smith chose Syracuse over offers from South Florida, Purdue, Bowling Green, and Southern Miss, among others.

The 6-foot-3, 194 pound linebacker from Lakeland, Florida (between Tampa and Orlando) is a long, athletic outside linebacker who made 68 tackles as a junior, including 15.5 tackles for loss with a pair of forced fumbles. Smith shows good penetration into the backfield, and is an aggressive tackler who can drive the ballcarrier back.

He’s got a good build and frame for the next level, too. It’s tough to tell from his HUDL film how well he does in pass coverage, but he appears to read and react well, and shows good closing speed in getting to the ballcarrier.

Smith becomes the fifth commitment for Syracuse in the class of 2018, joining Gabe Horan, Trill Williams, Tyrone Sampson, and Cooper Lutz. The Orange may not be done this week, either. Stay tuned, and in the meantime, check out Jack Smith’s junior year highlights…
