With the 2017 recruiting class getting close to being full, there are certain areas that would seem to be in need of attention. One of those areas is on the defensive line. The Orange boast some strong young talent in that area, but depth remains an issue. The coaching staff is hoping that defensive tackle JJ Holmes will help solve that particular problem.
Holmes is a 6-foot-2, 310 pound defensive tackle at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas (which plays in the same conference as Dodge City, where outside linebacker target – and former SU commit – Marquise Blair plays). Holmes is in his second year at Hutchinson, after coming out of Chipley, Florida.
This season, Holmes has 37 tackles, including 3.0 sacks, in eight games for Hutchinson. He also has 7.0 tackles-for-loss, and boasts offers from the likes of Indiana, Colorado State, Iowa State, Kansas State, Missouri, and Kentucky, among others. The big, extremely strong interior lineman would bolster Syracuse’s outstanding trio that features Steven Clark, Kayton Samuels, and Chris Slayton, along with true freshman McKinley Williams.
Holmes is considered a 3-star prospect, and rated among the top prospects at defensive tackle in the junior college ranks this season. He’d be a big-time pickup for the Orange as part of the program’s class of 2017.
