The Syracuse University football staff has missed out on a couple quarterback targets in the 2016 class, most recently with Sawyer Smith deciding to stay close to home to play at Central Florida yesterday, but another Sunshine State signal caller has rapidly risen up the Orange recruiting board: Rex Culpepper.
Culpepper is a 6-foot-3, 220 pound quarterback from Plant High in Tampa, and boasts a very impressive offer sheet that has names like Florida, Ohio State, Mississippi State, Clemson, Miami, NC State, West Virginia, among others. And as first reported by CuseNation.com, it appears that Culpepper is high on the Orange, and the Orange are high on him.
If his name sounds familiar, it’s not because he’s related to another Culpepper who played QB in the NFL, but his dad is a former professional football player. His father, Brad, was a defensive lineman who most notably played for the Tampa Bay Bucs after a college career at Florida. But that’s not where the fame in the family stops, as his mother, Monica, is a two-time contestant on Survivor (Brad joined her for one recent season).
But getting back to Culpepper, Syracuse.com followed up on the CuseNation.com story by reporting that Culpepper will be visiting campus with his family next week, and that a commitment could happen while the senior-to-be is on campus. Culpepper also has a younger brother in the class of 2018 who could wind up following in Rex’s footsteps. Judge Culpepper is a 6-foot-4, 230 pound tight end/defensive line prospect – fantastic size for a kid his age.
Watching Culpepper’s film, the thing that really jumped out at me, other than his already very good size for the position, was how much I felt like I was watching a young Ryan Nassib. Between his build, the way he moves, and his good, strong arm, I expect him to draw a few comparisons from Syracuse fans should be wind up deciding to play for head coach Scott Shafer.
