This probably won’t come as much of a surprise, but Eric Dungey has been named to the preseason Maxwell Award watch list. This is the second year in a row that Dungey has been on the list, with the award going to the nation’s top player.

Overall, there were 85 players named to the watch list, including a pretty staggering 41 quarterbacks. If Dungey is able to stay healthy, of course, that should put him among the top end of those quarterbacks, and great increase Syracuse’s chances of going bowling.

Dungey threw for 2,495 yards with 14 touchdowns and rushed for a career-high 595 yards and nine touchdowns last season before an injury shortened his year for the third straight season. As a sophomore, Dungey threw for 2,679 yards with 15 touchdowns, and his freshman season he threw for 1,298 yards and 11 touchdowns.

As the official Syracuse release notes, Dungey is the only active Division I quarterback with more than 6,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards (thanks for leaving early, Lamar!).

The Orange do have a former Maxwell Award winner, by the way: Don McPherson, who won the award in 1987, the same year he should have won the Heisman. Beat it, Tim Brown.
