Most Syracuse University basketball fans are probably sad and depressed with how the season has gone since the team returned to the mainland from the Bahamas. Regardless of how the rest of this season plays out, not all is lost and the future looks to be bright. In this article we’ll give updates on the notable commits and targets in the 2016-2018 classes.
Tyus Battle is off to a terrific start at his new high school, St. Joe’s Metuchen. So far he’s been filling the stat sheet with stats such as 18.5 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 4.0 APG, 3.0 SPG, and 1.8 BPG. Much has been debated whether he’s a PG or not. While I wouldn’t categorized him as a pure point, he is a very talented playmaker with the ball in his hands with the ability to create for himself and others.
Matt Moyer has been making the best of his move to the NEPSAC and playing for South Kent. He’s averaging 18.2 PPG and 8.0 RPG in the 1st half of the season. Not only is he putting in good work on the court, he’s also doing it in the weight room as well, bulking up to around 220 pounds currently. Moyer, along with Battle, was recently nominated for the McDonald’s All-American game.
Taurean Thompson, the big man from Brewster Academy, has stated publicly that SU and Seton Hall are currently his top two and that he’ll decide in the spring. He’s also having a good season with averages of 14.0 PPG, 9.0 RPG, and 3.0 BPG. He has received new offers from Pitt, NC State, Georgetown, and Providence. Thompson is doing his due diligence and has made a bunch of visits to various schools this season. Let’s hope he’ll eventually make another visit to SU again this season, giving the staff a chance to close this one out and add to their interior depth.
Quade Green is currently SU’s #1 target for the 2017 class and a player that they have set themselves in good shape with at the moment. Green might be a smaller guard than most have been used to seeing SU recruit, but he’s a very talented three level scorer with the usual tough Philly competitive spirit. On the season he’s averaging a team high in points with 15.2 PPG, 6.0 APG, and 5.0 RPG.
Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree is a teammate of Green’s at Neumann-Goretti and also sports an offer from SU. DCR is pretty much a late blooming big man prospect who is starting to come into his own this season with his development. He’s second behind Green for the team lead in scoring at 14.0 PPG, but leads the team in rebounds and blocks with 11.0 RPG and 5.0 BPG respectively. Along with SU, DCR has received offers from Nova, USC, Miami, and Providence, among others. Look for that offer list and his stock to increase as time goes along.
Trevon Duval was once looked upon as the #1 target for SU in 2017. Unfortunately with his move to API in Texas, SU quickly switched its sights on prioritizing Quade Green instead. Maryland and Arizona look to be the main schools at the moment for Duval. It’ll be interesting to see if heavy hitters like Duke and Kentucky eventually gets involved or if SU decides to make a heavy push for his services again.
Nick Richards, a 5-star big man, was being recruited and watched strongly by assistant Red Autry last summer. He mentioned various times about wanting to visiting SU, but so far no visit has happened at this point. Richards had been sidelined with a concussion, but made his season debut on Thursday night.
Andre Rafus (wing), Lonnie Walker (SG), Kodye Pugh (wing), and Deng Gak (PF/C) are other names to look out for that SU will mostly likely give more serious looks to in the future. Rafus is a shooting specialist at the wing similar to former Orange, James Southerland. Walker is an athletic guard with a college ready body and is a big time scorer. Pugh presents a lot of versatility at the forward position. Gak, who recently came over to the states from Australia, is a possible 5-star stock riser when the spring/summer circuit hits.
Not a lot of offers have been made yet in this class. Louis King (wing) and Naz Reid (PF) are the first two to have received offers and both are already considered 5-star talents. Speaking of 5-star talents, another pair, Cam Reddish (SG/SF) and Jahvon Quinerly (PG), are both being recruited strongly by the SU staff in the early stages and an offer should eventually be made to both at some point.
