Today’s the first day of the early signing period for college basketball recruits, and Syracuse University is getting the official pledge from Matthew Moyer at 2:00 p.m. this afternoon.
Moyer has been solidly committed to the Orange for more than a year, having given his pledge on August 8, 2014, and after being an “unofficial” member of the recruiting class of 2016, he seems pretty damn excited to be making it official.

Moyer is certainly a player for Orange fans to get excited about. The 6-foot-8, 205 pound forward from Columbus, Ohio as rated as the No. 54 prospect in the nation by ESPN.com, and No. 38 by 247sports.com. The long, athletic forward projects as more of a power forward than a small forward at the moment, though his burgeoning skill set could allow him to play either forward position. He’ll certainly be a welcome addition to the back of the 2-3 zone, with his long arms making him a potentially dangerous shot blocker, and rebounding being one of his strengths right now.
I mentioned his quickly improving skill set, which you can check out in this video:
Moyer’s jumper is a little unorthodox, and his handle could still get a bit tighter but overall you can see the makings of a very good, versatile weapon for Jim Boeheim and, later, Mike Hopkins to utilize. When I first watched Moyer play, I immediately thought “more athletic Ryan Blackwell” and I’m sticking with that, because Moyer’s build and the way he moves and plays is still very reminiscent of the former Orange combo forward.
So far there’s not much word on when his 2016 classmate Tyus Battle will be signing his letter of intent, but for now it’s exciting to finally, officially, add Matthew Moyer to the mix.
